Entry Deadline for 30 Seconds category has been extended to JULY 20!!

We have new category “NEW CHITOSE 30 Seconds Animation” (Each film must be 30 seconds or less, including time-loop film) this year.
The selected films in this category will be broadcast for a specific period on digital signage throughout the New Chitose Airport facility that boasts approximately 22 million annual users. One of these films will receive the award during the festival. Films already available online may also be submitted!

The installation ‘Touch on an Absence’ will be held in Tokyo from July 5th to July 15th.
It’s a new project by the artist Tabaimo, well-known for animated installations that use drawings and coloration evoking the hand-made nature of traditional Japanese woodblock prints, in collaboration with three filmmakers who are nominees for the Short Film category in NEW CHITOSE 2023.

When Tabaimo participated as a jury member at the “New Chitose Airport International Animation Festival 2023”, she rediscovered the depth of the world of animation. Inspired by this experience, she created this new project with three independent animation filmmakers she met there: Josh SHAFFNER (USA), Lea VIDAKOVIC (Serbia), and Stephen VUILLEMIN (France). By contextualizing the films of the three filmmakers within the realm of art in collaboration with Tabaimo, this work establishes a multi-layered relationship between animation and audiences, crafting an experiential installation that invites deep engagement and exploration.

Last year the festival received 2,300 works in all categories. The winners were “In Dreams” (Short Grand Prix, directed by Josh SHAFFNER), “Chicken for Linda!” (Feature Grand Prix, directed by Chiara MALTA, Sébastien LAUDENBACH), “Vision” (Japan Grand Prix, directed by Çağıl HARMANDAR), “Our Uniform” (New Talent Award, directed by Yegane MOGHADDAM) and else.

NEW CHITOSE is proud to announce the 11th edition: November 1-5, 2024.
The submission starts on April 22!

New Chitose Airport International Animation Festival is an animation festival dedicated to animated films held at the terminal building of New Chitose Airport (Hokkaido, Japan), which connects Hokkaido with the rest of the world as an entertainment airport. We are excited to announce the 11th edition of the festival: November 1-5, 2024.

Launched in 2014, the festival has been providing an exciting experience that is only possible as a one-of-a-kind “airport festival” and we gathered about 35,000 attendees last year.
The coming 11th edition will continue to present various programs delivering the look of animation “today” from various perspectives such as special screenings and guest speakers of films the festival picked to feature, in addition to the Competition section which is the main event of the festival receiving more than 2,000 entries from around the world each year.
