CALL FOR ENTRIES
Organizers and Purpose
The New Chitose Airport International Animation Festival 2024 is organized by the New Chitose Airport International Animation Festival Executive Committee and managed by the Festival Office. The goal is to actively introduce works that extend the significance of animation at the film festivals in Japan and to create new opportunities for international exchange through animation culture.
Festival period
From November 1 to 5, 2024
Film submission period
- Short Film: From April 22 to June 30, 2024 (GMT)
- Feature Film: From April 22 to July 20, 2024 (GMT)
Competition categories
Short Film (under 30 minutes);
The Selection Committee members will sort submissions into the relevant category based on judgment.
- ● International Competition: This is the main competition of the festival.
- ●Japan Competition: This competition is for films produced in Japan by international co-production involving Japan as one of the production countries.
- ●Student Competition: This competition is for films made by students.
Music Animation (under 30 minutes);
This category is for films with superior expression in animation and music, such as music videos. The Selection Committee members will sort submissions into the relevant category based on judgment from Short Films.
Feature Film (over 40 minutes)
*Please note: VR works are not accepted in this edition of the festival.
Submission requirements
- ●Submissions must be animated films completed in or after 2022.
- ●Films with languages other than Japanese or English must have English subtitles at the time of submission. For films with Japanese, English subtitles must be provided if they pass the primary selection.
- ●The director or the producer of the film or the entrant must hold the right to screen the film submitted, and all rights to screen the work during the festival must have been secured.
- ●Entrants must obtain permission from rights holders for the music, existing characters and all other elements used in their films before submission. The festival office assumes no responsibility for copyright violations, compensation for damage or other claims from third parties.
- ●Films that have previously been submitted to the past editions of the festival will not be accepted.
Submission methods
- ●There is no entry fee.
- ●Complete the Online Submission Form (incl. the fields for information on the film and the director) on the festival official website or FilmFreeway.
- ●Upload a photo of the director (72 dpi, jpg or png) and three stills (300 dpi, jpg or png) from the film. These will be used on the official festival website, flyers and other advertising materials.
- ●The film must be made available for Internet streaming. Films submitted as files, downloads, or dead links will be disqualified.
Selection and Notice
The results of the selection will be notified directly to the applicants by e-mail and will also be announced on the official website. Please see the page of “Team NEW CHITOSE” for information on Selection Committee members.
- ●Short Film and Music Animation: End of August, 2024
- ●Feature Film: End of September, 2024
Onsite Screening of films selected
- ●The selected films will be screened in the Official Selection programs during the festival.
- ●No screening fee will be paid for screening for Short Film and Music Animation category. For Feature Film, the festival will pay a screening fee in accordance with the Festival regulations.
- ●Entrants of the film selected should send us the screening copy within one week of notification of selection results via a storage service. For an encrypted DCP, please create and send a DKDM, as the lab that manages the festival’s screening materials will send you a cert file. (Shipping and all other costs related to film submission are the responsibility of entrants.)
- ●Films formats: DCP or QuickTime ProRes422
- ●The official languages of the competition will be Japanese and English. For Japanese and other non-English films, entrants are advised to embed English subtitles. The festival office will handle subtitling of the dialogue from English to Japanese (limited to the selected films). Accordingly, entrants submitting non-Japanese films are requested to draw up an English-language script to support the production of Japanese subtitles.
Awards
The festival will elect International Jury members. The International Jury may present the following awards as a result of deliberation during the festival. (Prize money will be remitted to award winners’ bank accounts after withholding of the applicable tax.)

There are the Audience Award that is decided through an audience voting system, and the Kids Award that Kid’s Jury select among the films shown in the “International Competition:Family” program other than the above awards.

Invitations
Short Film and Feature Film
The festival office will invite a director or producer of the selected film who is able to attend the Award Ceremony to be held on the last day of the festival period and a talk session “Meet the Filmmakers” held during your visit (one person per film).
- (1)Part of round-trip flight costs (as par the Festival Office regulations. *Please note: the films selected in Student Competition of Short Films category are not eligible.)
- (2)Accommodation during the festival period (applicable only to hotels arranged by the Festival Office and only for one person)
- (3)Part of meals during the festival (by meal coupon, as par with Festival Office regulations)
Music Animation
The festival office will invite a director or producer of the selected film who is able to attend the screening program “Music Animation Competition” with the Award Ceremony during the festival period. (schedule TBA; one person per film)

- (2)Accommodation during the festival period (applicable only to hotels arranged by the Festival Office and only for one person)

*Please note; Even if the film is selected in more than one category, only one person is invited.
Other notes
- ●Entrants of selected films grant the festival office the right to use part of their submissions (less than 10% of the film’s total length) and other related images (e.g., stills from the film) for festival publicity unless otherwise stated.
- ●After the festival, we would appreciate your consent to the extent possible to hold touring screenings for the promotion of the festival. Entrants will be contacted for the screening as needed and we ask for your cooperation as much as possible.
- ●No questions or objections to judgment results (such as requests for the disclosure of selection details or reasons for not being selected) will be accepted.
- ●By submitting a film through FilmFreeway, the applicant agrees to these guidelines. Please read these guidelines carefully before submitting your application.
