Independent Animators
This program features animated short films by a new generation of Chinese independent filmmakers, selected by artist Caibei CAI, who is a member of the Intenational Jury.
STATEMENT
This program presents ten animated shorts by a new generation of Chinese creators. Some are rooted in local contexts, while others traverse foreign experiences, together revealing the plural vitality of contemporary Chinese independent animation. My own creative orientation leads me to focus on how the theme of the ”body” is articulated in moving images: the body as the most immediate medium of individual experience, and as a site where cultural and social ideas are projected.
Not all works in this selection take the ”body” as their starting point, yet they refract distinct perspectives on bodily existence: the relation between self and the external world, the intersections of medium and sensation, the reconstruction of memory through the body, and the fluidity or fracture of identity. Across these films, the body appears as an open, continuously transforming entity. To extend this exploration, the audience is invited to follow a series of suggested exercises, each corresponding to one of the works.
(Programmer: CAI Caibei)

Stammer
JIE Shen
Treat the body as an instrument of voice, holding words in your mouth as if savoring ice cream.

Alien Human
PANG Wen
Take a deep breath, then hold it, imagining yourself suspended in a vacuum.

Fur
LI Zhen
Sense the stillness of the body, letting mold cover every movement beneath the gaze of the moon.

Fish
LAI Yingdan
When you can no longer hold your breath, release a chain of bubbles, and dance for a moment within the stirred-up memories.

The Taste of Beer
LI Xie
Bring your head as close to your feet as you can; curl into a ball, and celebrate with a sip of beer.

Self Scratch
YANG Chenghua
Enlarge the body until it fills the entire space; this gigantic body will not harm you—it will protect you.

All Night Home
LU Yicheng
Perhaps fear will arise, but resist closing your eyes. Instead, experience the instant when every pore is opened.

Half Asleep
CAI Caibei
Split the body into two, letting incomplete limbs probe and collide with one another.

Patient’s Mind
WANG Zhiheng
If you wish to possess a whole body, you and another version of yourself must struggle for it—yet the outcome still rests with you.

Sliver Cave
CAI Caibei
At last, return to the cinema. The chase between prey and predator never ceases, just as the pursuit between spectator and image goes on without end.
