The official selection for 30 Seconds Animation category are on display at the Center Plaza on the 2nd floor of New Chitose Airport. Students from Hokkaido Chitose High School have kindly contributed their reviews for each film. Please enjoy the works along with their fresh and heartfelt messages.

ABE Chisari-san: When I first saw the animation. I found myself laughing softly. Rather than drawing fun movements one image at a time, a bunch of different movements fill the whole screen, making it interesting from start to finish, like a red bean paste filling of concentrated fun. It’s a piece of work you could watch repeatedly without tiring.

KITA Kokona-san: The bright and colorful palette and the up-tempo music really draw the attention of both the eyes and the ears of the viewers. The screen is filled with the girls’ unique moves and so much information that you can discover something new with every viewing. This work is only 8 seconds, but it is chock-full of fun.

You, in the Cube Aquarium

TANJI Nami

Some time ago, when I was living alone, I bought a 25-centimeter cube aquarium and kept a single fish. He was a feisty little guy—darting up and down along the tiny walls, even leaping out sometimes. Watching him every day, I found myself wondering: If I were to live inside that tank, wouldn’t I look absolutely ridiculous?

Koiomikujishinja-san: I thought the artistic touch of the pictures was very cute, as if a kindergarten child had drawn them. I also found the plopping sound of the water very soothing. The unique, kind of dumb way a fish in an aquarium acts is depicted so well, it made me chuckle. This is a short animation you will want to watch again and again.

Uni-san: A strange short animation that depicts a fish moving around in an aquarium as a human. The fish’s unique way of moving and weird actions are rendered very faithfully. It’s one of those pieces of work that draws you in more every time you watch them. The sound of the water and the cute art style are very soothing.

Summer Holidays

TSUKAMOTO Mao

This work is a challenge to eliminate things outside the range of human perception of reality and to depict the cross-sectional view seen from the edge of the range as an animation. The main character, ”Henohenomoheji”, repeats his ideal summer holiday.

Tokuo-san: I thought this was going to be a more relaxed animation, but suddenly everything starts moving. The art is so detailed, it’s not only about the “Heno heno moheji” character, every corner of the screen is filled with something, and you’ll find yourself replaying it over and over. I would love the viewers to pay special attention to the change in Japanese letters in the character’s face as his expression changes.

Yui-san: What caught my attention in this animation is that only the ground and background around the character are visible. Only depicting the area in his field of awareness directs the viewer's focus solely to the most important elements, making it a very easy-to-watch piece. The way he falls when he sleeps really made me empathize with the feeling of being outside of any type of awareness.

Bucchi-san: This stop-motion animation was a very exciting 18 seconds. The technique used to make you think “This is water!” despite it being paper is remarkable and they even made water droplets and other elements from paper, which allowed for a deeper immersion. The story structure is thoroughly thought out and well-paced, which I really enjoyed.

Komoreme-san: Formless things and things with form. To me, it seemed like the image of this hand transcended having a form or not, before plunging back into the image itself like a person. Water and paper... what world did the artist envision from their hand? And what do you, the viewer, think when you stand before this work? What images come to your mind? I feel pretty　curious.

Traces of Presence

OHASHI Takashi

This motion graphics piece explores “presence,” nestled between perspectives and time, along with the theme of resolution. Smooth morphing animations rendered in high frame rates depict undivided, continuous time, unlike apparent motion. Through transitions between varied layouts, the work suggests shifts in viewpoints, perspective, and the vector–pixel relationship. Using inorganic vector graphics, it visualizes the trace of time someone once spent in that space—their lingering presence.

Shiisaa-san: This is a very simple, monochrome line drawing piece. It masterfully expresses the visual phenomenon caused by light refraction as art through the line work. It really shows the art hidden within everyday life from a point of view you don’t get to see often. The absence of sound also allows the viewers to focus on the artwork, adding to the charm.

Ferrari-san: Everyone has experienced moments like this, when moving slightly reveals a different perspective. This animation satisfies that everyday curiosity of wondering what things are like from behind, or what happens when water flows through as we change our point of view. Every angle feels familiar and relatable, which draws the viewers in as they watch.

Nanami-san: The mysterious world of this work really drew me in, as well as the characters, who left a strong impression, and the rich color palette. The animation makes you appreciate how colorful and full of the light the world is, as it represents the origins of life and the universe. Where did we come from? What are they? This is a fun animation that also makes you reflect on all of this.

Souya-san: I was attracted by the thumbnail's adorable colors and swirls, so I hit play and ended up completely hooked, watching it over and over. I thought the blue creature was the protagonist, and that this animation condensed the origin of life and all of Earth's entire history into 30 seconds. I believe the title and sparkly vibes indicate that our world’s history has only just begun.

Waa-san: This charming animation features adorable music, art and color palettes. Little people diligently craft sparkling star decorations as others dance merrily to the music while neglecting their tasks. Each of the many little people is unique and showcase their distinct personalities. It's a captivating piece you'll want to revisit time and again.

K.I-san: There is so much information packed in only 8 seconds, and the quality is amazing! The artwork is so cute I could stare at it forever. You can really see the perspective. The details such as the stars drawn in the background or grass on the ground are fascinating! Another highlight is how the shadows move realistically at every one of the little people’s actions, which makes it look so natural.

ARAMAKI Koji

By incorporating the unique silhouettes of ceramics and sculpture as motifs for motion graphics, we aimed to achieve both a graphical image and a tactile feeling clean coldness and craftlike warmth. The overall structure of the work, which progresses in an intertwining sequence of multiple patterns, is a motion graphics analogy of the production process of ceramics, from the chaos before the shape is determined, to the determination of the shape, to the change of material through firing.

Lamborghini-san: The graphics are extremely captivating, and the objects are rendered with an exceptional texture quality. Combined with highly saturated vivid colors and exciting background music, it makes for a truly memorable piece of animation! It’s just my personal impression, but I thought it had a gem-like beauty that was stunning.

Tokumei-san: Soft, formless things gradually take shape, form a single structure and become a work of art. Every one possesses its own unique texture, color, and form, making them feel almost alive.
