Reviews from Hokkaido Chitose High School Students

I thought the artistic touch of the pictures was very cute, as if a kindergarten child had drawn them. I also found the plopping sound of the water very soothing. The unique, kind of dumb way a fish in an aquarium acts is depicted so well, it made me chuckle. This is a short animation you will want to watch again and again.

A strange short animation that depicts a fish moving around in an aquarium as a human. The fish’s unique way of moving and weird actions are rendered very faithfully. It’s one of those pieces of work that draws you in more every time you watch them. The sound of the water and the cute art style are very soothing.

Synopsis

Some time ago, when I was living alone, I bought a 25-centimeter cube aquarium and kept a single fish. He was a feisty little guy—darting up and down along the tiny walls, even leaping out sometimes. Watching him every day, I found myself wondering: If I were to live inside that tank, wouldn’t I look absolutely ridiculous?

PROFILE

TANJI Nami

Born in 2000, Chiba, Japan. Graduated from the Department of Oil Painting, Tama Art University in 2024. Currently a second-year Master’s student in Animation at the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts (GEIDAI). While creating paintings, I struggled with the ”distance” between people and artworks. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I began exploring animation as a new medium. In my work, I enjoy discovering surreal, humorous scenes and absurdities hidden in everyday life, and turning them into approachable animations. In addition to animation and illustration, I also create interactive pieces that allow viewers to play with animation on the iPad, as part of my ongoing exploration of how to bridge the gap between audience and artwork.
