CURATED SCREENING

Eyeworks
Experimental Animation Screening Series
Program 2

This special program of the Eyeworks Experimental Animation Screening Series is co-curated by Lilli CARRÉ, a member of the international jury for the Short Film Competition, and Alexander STEWART, a selected filmmaker in the Music Animation Competition. The two programs present works ranging from classics to contemporary films.

What is the Eyeworks Experimental Animation Screening Series?

The Eyeworks Experimental Animation Screening Series is an annual festival focusing on experimental animation, with screening events in Chicago, LA, and NYC each fall. Eyeworks spotlights works made by individual artists, drawing on the tradition of classic cartoon animation and the lineages of avant-garde and underground cinema. The aim of Eyeworks, now in its 15th year, is to present works that celebrate animation as an experimental art form. Eyeworks is curated by Alexander Stewart and Lilli Carré, and is presented by Pioneer Works.

Fanny SORGO, Eva PEDROZA

Mr. Ham decides to have his heart removed in order to be relieved of his complicated feelings. The doctor assures him that this is no longer a problem at all in this day and age. However, Ham keeps his heart for a while after the removal in order to perhaps understand it better after all. Tako Tsubo is an animated, surrealistic reflection on dealing with feelings in a meritocracy.

Rapid Eye Movements

1977 | United States | 0:11:00

Jeff CARPENTER, Mary LAMBERT

An obscured world of night lives, eavesdropped phone calls, and philosophical romantic musings.

XYZ

2026 | Luxembourg | 0:12:00

Alexandre ALAGÔA

An obsessive exploration of the three geometric dimensions in hopes of reaching a fourth. Created by shooting with a camera on a tripod throughout the halls of a building where the filmmaker used to work.

Altair

1995 | United States | 0:07:00

Lewis KLAHR

Altair offers a cutout animation version of color film noir. The images were culled from six, late forties issues of Cosmopolitan magazine and set to an almost 4 minute segment of Stravinsky’s “Firebird” to create a sinister, perfumed world. The viewer is encouraged to speculate on the nature and details of the woman’s battle with large, malevolent societal forces and her descent into an alcoholic swoon.

Sliver Cave

2021 | China | 0:14:00

Caibei CAI

Stepping into a cave, the sight fluctuates by the firelight. Left to right, top to bottom. The same goes for the screen in front of you. It is a borderless tunnel, presenting domestication and desire.

Molly Dane

2020 | United States | 0:06:00

Ida LASIC

Experience the ritz and glamour of a death at the Dane's fundraiser.

River Lethe

1985 | United States | 0:07:00

Amy KRAVITZ

A non-narrative and abstract visual poem in five parts. Its title refers to the underworld river of forgetfulness. The drawings are created from non-traditional animation media including rubbed and erased graphite, pigment, and aluminum powders to make an animate surface of unusual richness.
