CURATED SCREENING
Eyeworks
Experimental Animation Screening Series
Program 1
This special program of the Eyeworks Experimental Animation Screening Series is co-curated by Lilli CARRÉ, a member of the international jury for the Short Film Competition, and Alexander STEWART, a selected filmmaker in the Music Animation Competition. The two programs present works ranging from classics to contemporary films.
What is the Eyeworks Experimental Animation Screening Series?
The Eyeworks Experimental Animation Screening Series is an annual festival focusing on experimental animation, with screening events in Chicago, LA, and NYC each fall. Eyeworks spotlights works made by individual artists, drawing on the tradition of classic cartoon animation and the lineages of avant-garde and underground cinema. The aim of Eyeworks, now in its 15th year, is to present works that celebrate animation as an experimental art form. Eyeworks is curated by Alexander Stewart and Lilli Carré, and is presented by Pioneer Works.

Action Bog
Winston HACKING
A feverish stasis collapses into infinite distraction, spinning on the axis of an algorithm. Time stretches like soft polymer as metamorphoses creep forward frame by frame, suspiciously slow, as if the film were watching me back. Photographic fragments transferred onto clay become Tonermorphs—neither sculpture nor collage. Figures emerge mid-gesture, faces never whole, suspended in their own skin. A non-narrative work scored by electroacoustic and musique concrète composer Andrew Zukerman.
Springfield
Emma CALDER
Part woman, part vacuum cleaner, what do these effeminate cyborgs have to say about alienation and the gendered hierarchies we inhabit? A witty and offbeat probing of loss, obsession, desperation and fear.
Leaks in the Lines
Adebukola BODUNRIN
Leaks in the Lines is a hybrid film combining laser etching, phytograms, and 8mm footage of gardens to explore the tension between organic growth and imposed order.
Veils of Landscape
YAMANAKA Chihiro
The east wind begins to blow, carrying warmth into the water. Landscapes merge without boundaries, and in time, the mountains drift into slumber.
ORCHID
Joann GILLERMAN
Technology meets sensuality as associations of gender are transposed into a yin/yang of unexpected androgyny. Computer graphics, live video and fluid hand drawn frame-by-frame fracturing animations create unique abstracted forms with unlikely pairings of living orchids, human form, nature and technology.
The Undiscovered Drawer
Shana MOULTON
A series of nested drawers opens for Cynthia, leading her on another journey of self-realization.
Preludes in Magical Time
Sara PETTY
The [film’s] imagery alludes to a window and curtains dancing in a breeze, which creates a structural element throughout the animation, as it drifts and unfolds into completely non-objective forms.
Art’s Infancy
Emile COHL
Created before cels were used in animation, this film blended techniques of hand-drawn linework, paper cut-outs, trick photography, human pixilation, and mixed-media live-action into a single experimental short film which explores imagined origins of creativity.
Vision
Çağıl HARMANDAR
Eyes are magical spheres that make up dreams and retain memories. In our eyes, the visions of the within and of the beyond overlap. New worlds come to be when our gazes meet.
What Do We See After Closing Our Eyes and Covering Our Ears
Julian ANTONISZ
One of a series of films Antonisz made using his “pantograf-animograf,” an ingenious mechanical device that scales drawings down to the size of a film frame and mechanically animates transformations between drawings.
Go To Hell
Ruth PEYSER
After a fight with her boyfriend, a woman falls through a hole in the stairs into a hellish fantasy world where she is confronted by a series of terrifying situations. When she emerges her fear turns to anger, giving her the courage to fight back. Along the way, she discovers the power and exhilaration of finding her voice.
Ensmoothening
Kevin ESKEW
Visualize an Earth of such tranquility and peace in nature that it must be the true marvel of all the ages. A land for forever, smoothened and sterilized. That's the Dream! Yes! A smooth plastic-coated marble world!
